Shutter speed is how long the hole stays open. The shutter speed is read in fractions and seconds. The room was pitch black. So in order to get the pictures to come out the way they did, we left the shutter open for 15 seconds so that enough light would come in. I would rather choose using shutter speed instead of aperature and ISO when I want to mess around with light.
