A light meter measures the amount of light that's coming in. In the first picture we metered the computer screen so that everything darker then the screen came out black and everything lighter, came out brighter. In the second picture we metered our partner's face, therefore, you could see them clearly. But because the screen is lighter, metering the face made it super bright. Metering can help you when it's dark and your subject can't be seen. Once you meter your subject it'll be visible.
